Painting represents a leap of faith and a belief that turning the lens on oneself will yield something of value. When I face a blank canvas I don’t know where I am headed but I am curious to see where I will go. Current events challenge long held perceptions and seep into my psyche and my work. I am influenced by recent pivotal events and my place in the world as a woman.
Shape and line work are fundamental to my abstract practice. As I work on a painting the meaning and relationship of these elements evolves with each layer.
Along the way, I start to see a connective thread. Like breadcrumbs, I follow until the painting and I are comfortable with each other, and the dialogue between us has matured. There is now a clarity about what the painting is about. I will edit if I feel there is clutter or may add more marks to refine the story. This final stage of a painting is my favorite.
